Kate Speidel is a Project Architect with five years of experience working on diverse projects in and around New York City, the West Coast, and Asia.
In small scale commercial and residential renovations as much as in large infrastructure projects, Kate approaches architectural design with the practical assumption that sustainability is a prerequisite for viability in the twenty-first century. Kate has worked in varied capacities as a junior architect, drafter, planner, and designer with teams planning miniature rooftop gardens and a small blue-roof reflecting pool, as well as massive infrastructure projects, including the Penn Station Vision project, and Croton Water Treatment Plant, a nine-acre green roof project in the Bronx.

LIRR Hicksville Station Improvements, Long Island, NY. Hicksville Station is an active hub with three tracks where AECOM was selected to design a station rehabilitation, upgrading the platform and canopy, as well as replacing stairs, elevators, and waiting room buildings. The project is designed in three phases, and will be a major upgrade to the station environment, making Hicksville Station safer for passengers and employees and providing ADA accessibility. Kate assisted with surveying and schematic design and drafted the architectural bid set. Client: MTA Long Island Rail Road. [2013-Current]
Grand Central Terminal Main Concourse Restroom Expansion, New York, NY. Worked with a small team to design a preliminary conceptual layout for the restroom expansion and renovation on the Main Concourse level of Grand Central Terminal. Metro-North targeted two locations that will be converted into new Women’s and Men’s Restrooms, intending to maximize the plumbing fixture count to reduce the wait time and queuing at the restrooms. Kate assisted with survey and accessibility analysis and led the production effort, generating removal and construction drawings for two schemes, and compiling a conceptual design and magnitude report. Client: Metro-North Commuter Rail Road (MNCRR), a subsidiary of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA). [2013-Current]
Penn Station Vision Project, New York, NY. AECOM is part of a joint venture design team retained to create a series of proposals for the renovation of Penn Station, New York. Kate worked on design drawings and helped research and produce diagrammatic studies showing the specific implications changes to the existing system will have on the city. La Guardia Airport Central Terminal Building Water Damage Remediation, Queens, NY. Assisted with site survey and construction detail drawing for landside roadway repairs and addition of new gutters. Client: The Port Authority of NY & NJ [2013-Current]
Queens Supreme Court Elevator Replacement, Queens, NY. Conducted site survey and led production effort of construction drawing set to provide handicap accessibility and replace ten elevators in this landmarked building. Client: NYC Department of Citywide Administrative Services (DCAS) [2013-2014]
Crossgates Mall Transit Center Addition, Albany, NY. Worked with a small team on this very fast-paced task order to design and render a new bus depot at the Crossgates Mall in Albany. Rendered conceptual design with Rhino and VRay software, showing proposed ticket booths, waiting rooms, signage, and canopied connections to the mall. Client: Capitol District Transportation Authority (CDTA) [2013]

Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, ATL Green Construction Best Practices Manual, Atlanta, Georgia. Working with AECOM’s Atlanta office, Kate researched and developed a comprehensive airport-specific manual of performance standards and best practices for the construction phase. The GCBPM Manual includes recommended sustainability standards for airport construction projects and can be used as a model for measuring and comparing a project’s sustainability performance during construction. The GCBPM considers the unique opportunities and challenges that arise during airport construction projects as part of the DOA’s overall Sustainable Management Plan. [2012-2013]
Croton Water Treatment Plant, New York, NY. Kate assisted in design services during construction, including product selection and shop drawing review for the project’s 9-acre extensive green roof, as well as research which lead to the acceptance of the innovative new electronic vector field mapping (EVFM) technology for ongoing leak detection. Kate also coordinated safety plant signage, waste management procedures, and evacuation plans for code compliance. Client: NYC Department of Environmental Protection. [2009-Current]
Jamaica Wastewater Treatment Plant, Queens, NY. Worked on the Construction Manager’s Office Building in Jamaica, Queens, creating construction documents and performing project management tasks, including product specification for an extensive green roof designed to absorb up to 13,000 gallons of stormwater annually. This building has been awarded the LEED Silver certification. Client: NYC Department of Environmental Protection. [2009-2013]
NYC DEP, 26th Ward Waste Water Treatment Plant ARP, Brooklyn, NY. Created rendered graphic displays and construction documents for the new Chemical Storage Building and existing facilities renovation at 26th Ward Waste Water Treatment Plant in Brooklyn. Taiwan Centers for Disease Control, Hsinchu Biomedical Science Park, Taiwan. This design for four interconnected buildings that will make up the Centers for Disease Control includes a renewable bamboo perforated paneling system for exterior circulation and sunscreens, as well as multiple green roof systems. Assisted with program research and developed 3D renderings and construction documents responding to the extensive range of programmatic requirements set forth. [2008]
Evening Land Vineyards, Lompoc, California. Worked with a team developing a blue roof solution for ELV Wines in Santa Barbara, CA. Reclaimed steel-sided sheds rolling on railroad tracks held a tasting pavilion, facing a partially bermed building with a blue roof, offering evaporative cooling for visitors and insulation for the wine storage below.
